one dollar eighty nine at stewart's and a few minutes later

hello! we are back home from the milwaukee show on saturday. we took the amtrak there and milled around milwaukee a bit before the show, and i filmed a lot of it and edited into a video, here.

the show itself went great! we played pretty well except for one of my guitar strings exploding during the first song, but it didn't matter because luke from mail graciously lent me his guitar and it imbued me with psychic rock and roll powers. people moshed! and then they moshed so hard during mail there were casualties! we sold some cds! pretty cool. it was also vampire themed, apparently? nobody told us though...

it was the best possible first show. i am beyond excited to keep playing shows with this band. thank you everyone who came and thank you to everyone yet to come. like ebenezer scrooge at 12am on christmas night.

god bless us everyone

count your lucky stars like bugs in the screen door

hello!! today we have music out! for real! it's an EP/single/thing called lucky stars like bugs in the screen door. i hesitate to define it because paper moons is supposed to be on the album too... so it's just a bunch of cool songs. i wanted it to have it's own name like rainsnowmatch by braid instead of just naming it after paper moons. we recorded these in a lot of weird conditions over the past few months (like desi learning and recording all of sky wheel in less than an hour so we wouldn't have to spend another 30 bucks on renting a practice room), but i think it turned out rather good. it feels good. i hope you listen!

silk strands on the window

it has come to my attention that not many people are aware of the existence of halloween goodie bag! which is a great shame i intend to repair.

halloween goodie bag is a project i started in october 2022 out of sheer panic that the album i had just released in september was unforgivably bad. i felt i had to prove, at least to myself, that i was capable of writing and recording a good song. so i gave myself a deadline of halloween and scrambled to write SOMETHING, ANYTHING. the result was weather spent, which is a song i'm still fairly proud of.

the next year i wanted to continue the tradition, so i established a real rule set designed to invoke the most horrible feeling in my chest on the night of october 30th: i must write a brand new song from scratch and record, mix and release it on halloween. nothing can carry over from september, it has to be brand new. and i have to up the ante in some fashion from last year's release. so i made a video:

for year three, who knows what i'll do! i don't even know yet, and it's the 9th! it's all in the spirit of the tradition to be stressed beyond belief all month until the very last moment. but i have a feeling it will involve my beautiful band and a magical little thing called not playing all the instruments yourself.

lowering the standards in a process selective

it's been awhile, hasn't it?

i always seem to be writing these from libraries. at least this time, it's not my school's library, just the other one with the exact same name. i've been very very busy these past few months, but in a way with very little to show for it. so i thought i'd write a handy little list, for no one in particular.

1. i've played FIVE shows with lund surk. usually guitar and singing, but we got down to some mischief in detroit. playing with that band is seriously some of the most fun a person can have. i'm editing a fancy video of the july 26th one at the fallen log right now, it should be out as soon as i can stop fighting with google drive. the general public also almost had a run in with a real, in the flesh make like marigold set on the 17th, but the stars didn't quite align. consider yourself lucky that you didn't have to replace your roof, borelli's pizza.

2. we've been recording. last month before deerest friends toured, me and desi tracked 2 album songs on drums. the takes are incredible and the drum sound is even more so. after coming back from detroit, i recorded a song about it with teagan from hollow bastion called "loitering ain't even a crime". after biting her title i just had to get her on the song and she made it way better. we also recorded a song for consideration in the 13th emo diaries comp which is pretty killer. des learned and recorded the whole thing in ONE HOUR. i love my band.

3. there's something in the works that should serve as a supplimentary thing to the album. progress has been slower than i hoped so having something out there to stave off stagnation sounds pretty good. i've also been thinking about posting little things here and there on this page, like demos or maybe one off songs i record myself. in fact, here's one just for proof of concept.

that's all for now

god's grace got blood inside the phone

i've been listening to the new porches singles so much, they're so great. normally i get pissed off at artists releasing like 5 singles before the album (i would never do that to you), but he's got some kind of worms in his brain that make the songs so good i don't care. you should listen to joker over and over until it makes sense like i'm doing. i think it's about murdering someone? or petting a dog? maybe i'm not there yet.

in marigold news, we've got two practices in the bag and we're already the best band of all time i fear. we nailed down a practice space thanks to kai slater (<3) and now we're allowed to play so loud our ears ring afterwards. there's a mysterious locked drawer in the corner labeled "forbidden drawer" and i feel like i have a moral duty to find out what's in that thing. i also got briefly sick last night from using a mic i found on the floor but i got better and i forgive the mic. we're kind of in crazy good shape to be recording soon actually which i'm so happy about. it's been way too long for me.

there's a surk show tonight which they're gonna kill obviously. the day lund surk doesn't put on a good show is the day lund surk is erased from the human consciousness by an alien satellite laser beam. i also get to see a friend i haven't seen in a few weeks so i'm really excited. just have to trudge through another 4 hours of school and i'm outta here.

outta here

mrmrfungican'tyousee

hi.

i'm sitting in the library right now writing this instead of doing homework. i'm not sure how to start this page exactly, it's kind of like starting a new sketchbook and staring at the blank first page for hours before scrawling a doofy little goblin in the corner. it's also odd to be writing to nobody in particular besides the couple people who know about this page. but i do have half baked news now! and you're reading this right now from the future. so it's worth it.

first practice with desi is tomorrow. time pressure is on and we don't have a defined practice space yet; but i'm hoping the squeeze will make us tighter faster. i also have a lead on hosting shows in the back of a bookstore in bridgeport. i just emailed the owner, trying not to get my hopes too up but i promise it'll be crazy if it works out. what if i bought a projector and made video art to play behind the bands... maybe that can go on the backburner. or maybe it can't, because it's awesome! cut to me with a whole lighting rig in my apartment and no booked shows.

i'll update this page with new marigold stuff as it comes. i hope we can get some music swirling around in the air before the summer splinters at the ends. i've had melrah stuck in my head for 4 days straight. lund surk is the best band in the universe.

see you soon
